Das Viru-Tor
Der vordere Teil des Viru-Tors wurde im 14. Jh. zum Schutz der Tallinner Stadtmauer erbaut.
Einige Jahrhunderte später gab es schon 8 Tore, die aus mehreren Türmen und Mauern bestanden, die sie miteinander verbanden. Das Haupttor war immer viereckig und die vorderen Tore wurden mit ein oder zwei kleinen runden Türmen versehen.
Im Zusammenhang mit der Erweiterung der Einfahrtstraßen in die Altstadt wurden mehrere Tore abgerissen. Auch das Viru-Tor musste der Pferdebahn, die den Altmarkt mit Kadriorg verband, Platz machen.
Ecktürme sind bis heute erhalten, auch ein Teil von der Bastion, der heute Musumägi (dt. Kussberg) genannt wird. Die Viru Straße, an der es viele Geschäfte und Restaurants gibt, ist zu einer der belebtesten Fußgängerstraßen in der Altstadt geworden.
