From fort to city – 800 years from the birth of the ’Danish town’

How old is the settlement around Tallinn? When does the settlement become a city? What was life like under the early Danish rule?

The exhibition looks at the three first phases in the formation of the city of Tallinn: the area before the city, the arrival of the Danish King Valdemar II, and the establishment of the city of Tallinn. The displays include archaeological finds from Tallinn as well as from Tartu, Riga and Lund for comparison. Artist Jaana Ratas has also created a detailed, animated model of Tallinn during the Danish era.
