Kalma sauna in Tallinn

There were saunas in Tallinn as early as in the Middle Ages, but one of the oldest of them is the wood-burning Kalma sauna, which was built in Kalamaja district in 1928 and operates to this day. The first owner of the sauna, which used to be the most modern sauna in Tallinn, was Paul Vinter. There is still a sign saying ’Kalma saun’, which is an abbreviation of ’Kalamaja sauna’, above the main entrance door. The history and soul of the sauna, which has been renovated several times, as well as its architecture and traditions, can be sensed from the outside. Talking to the locals and going to the sauna with them will take you on a journey to the Soviet era. There are separate areas for men, women, and families in the sauna. Soft drinks and sauna supplies are also sold.

The facility was really good and a unique traditional experience of sauna. Do not hesitate to make a visit; something to remember and won’t regret it.

Booked a private sauna room last minute, which was only a 9 min walk from the hotel, through the snow, ice and slush. Took our own towels as we couldn’t find any information, but am aware that they... Read more comments
