Located by the sea and rich with history, Kopli gets its name from the pastures (“karjakoplid”) once located there in the middle ages. At the beginning of the last century, Kopli was a quickly developing industrial area home to the Russian Empire’s strategically important shipyards. However, during the Soviet occupation, the area’s prosperity and reputation entered a decline.
The area’s industrial legacy has developed into Kopli’s modern image, with former workhouses and barracks rebuilt into comfortable seaside family homes. The Põhjala Factory has become a vibrant centre for creativity and entertainment, where one can enjoy Michelin Star dining experiences as well as lively cultural events and nightlife. Kopli’s restored parks and green spaces are home to many opportunities for rest, recreation as well as sports.
Innovative entrepreneurs and a passionate local community have revitalised Kopli and made it one of Tallinn’s most exciting neighbourhoods. Kopli is connected to the city centre by convenient and frequent trams.
